FAQs About Tibet Permit

As you know, all foreign travelers (including Taiwan citizens) need a Tibet Tour Permit (TTP) in order to go to Tibet.

1.On average how many days does it take to get a Tibet Permit?


Usually the tibet travel permit application would take around 5 working days but it also depends on your tour, if your tour is going to some restricted areas like further to Ranwu in the east then the permit may take longer as these areas need additional permits.


2.What is the max number of days that you can get on the permit?

For a normal Tibet tour, including tours to Mt. Everest, permit application must be carried out 15 days before the trip starts. The permit application checking and approval takes about 8 days, because not only Tibet Tourism Bureau but also Tibet Public Security Bureau will check all the documents carefully. So, it’s about 7 days before the trip, the permit can be issued to your Tibet tour operator. The Tibet Tourism Bureau does not accept very early application, like 20 or 30 days before the trip, so it’s impossible for you to get your permit very early.

According to the current permit policy, you should apply the permit 15 days before your arrival date, then if you will fly into Tibet then you need the original permit to board the flight from mainland China and the most of express mail take around 3 days to reach the permit to you excluding HK.

3.How to Obtain Tibet Travel Permit?

1).Provide the travel agency your passport with a valid Chinese visa.
2).Travel itinerary is a must for getting TTP. You can either choose their tibet tour packages or customize a tour based on your interests.
3).After confirming the itinerary, the travel agency will start the application on your behalf.

Important Issues About Tibet Travel Permit Must Take In Mind:
1. Only after having your Tibet Travel Permit can a travel agency buy air tickets for you. You can then pass airport check-in.
2. Even if you have the Tibet Travel Permit, you are not allowed to travel anywhere outside your tibet tour itinerary. If you want to get out of your itinerary, you have to apply for another permit.
